Tournaments Explained

Whether you’re competing for a provincial title, earning Player of the Year points, or experiencing championship golf for the first time, Golf NB’s competitions offer something for every player. Below, you’ll find an overview of our major championships and events, including who can participate, how each competition is played, and what makes them an important part of the New Brunswick golf season.

  • Men’s, Women’s, and Senior Men’s Fourball

    A Fourball (also known as “best ball”) Championship is a team event where two players compete together. Each player plays their own ball for the entire whole, but only the lower score between the two teammates counts toward the teams’ score on each hole. This format highlights teamwork, strategy, and camaraderie while still allowing players to recover if one teammate has a difficult hole.

     

    Golf NB awards Provincial Fourball Champions in the Men’s, Women’s, and Senior Men’s divisions each year. Teams compete over two rounds of stroke play, with the lowest total team score earning the title. These championships are often the first major provincial events of the season and bring together some of New Brunswick’s best amateur golfers.

     

  • Men’s Amateur

    The Men’s Amateur Championship brings together many of New Brunswick’s top amateur golfers to compete over three days of individual stroke play. Players compete as individuals, with every stroke counting toward their overall score. At the conclusion of the championship, the player with the lowest total score is awarded the title of the New Brunswick Men’s Amateur Champion.

     

    In addition to competing for the provincial title, players are also competing for opportunities to represent New Brunswick at the National Men’s Amateur Championship. The top three finishers may earn selection to the provincial team and the chance to compete against some of the best amateur golfers across Canada. The championship also serves as a qualifier for the Explore NB Open, giving players an opportunity to earn a spot in one of the provinces’ top golf tournaments.

     

    The Men’s Amateur Championship is one of the largest individual championships on the Golf NB calendar and provides a competitive test for golfers looking to measure their game against some of the provinces’ best.

     

  • Women’s Provincials

    The Women’s Provincial Championship brings together female golfers from across New Brunswick to compete for a provincial title and showcase their skills against the province’s best.

     

    Players compete in an individual stroke play format over multiple rounds, with the lowest overall score determining the champion. The championship provides an opportunity for golfers of all ages and competitive backgrounds to test their game in a welcoming yet competitive environment while competing for one of the province’s most recognized women’s titles.

     

    Strong performances at the Women’s Provincial Championship can also lead to opportunities beyond the provincial level, with top finishers earning exemptions or qualification opportunities into the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship.

     

  • Juinor Provincials

    The Junior Provincial Championships consist of New Brunswick’s top junior golfers for a multi-day championship that showcases the next generation of talent in the province. Open to eligible junior golfers, the event provides an opportunity to compete against peers from across New Brunswick in a challenging and competitive environment.

     

    Players compete individually in a stroke play format, with champions crowned in both the Junior Boys and Junior Girls divisions. In addition to competing for provincial titles, players may also earn opportunities for Team New Brunswick selection and qualification for national championships.

     

    The Junior Provincial Championships provide young golfers with valuable competitive experience and the opportunity to compete for provincial titles while testing their game against other top juniors from across New Brunswick.

     

  • Men’s Mid-Amateur/Mid-Master

    The Men’s Mid-Amateur and Mid-Master Championship brings together experienced amateur golfers from across New Brunswick for three days of competition.

     

    The Mid-Amateur division is open to golfers aged 25 and older, while the Mid-Master division is open to golfers aged 40 or older. Players compete individually in a multi-round stroke play championship, with separate champions crowned in each division.

     

    As well as competing for provincial titles, eligible players have the opportunity to earn selection to Team New Brunswick and Represent the province at national championships.

     

  • Men’s Senior Championship

    The Men’s Senior Championship gathers New Brunswick’s top senior golfers to compete for a provincial championship title.

     

    Players compete individually over multiple rounds of stroke play, with champions crowned in both the Senior and Super Senior divisions. In addition to competing for provincial titles, eligible players have the opportunity to earn selection to Team New Brunswick and represent the province at national senior championships.

     

  • Family Classic

    The Family Class is one of Golf NB’s most unique and enjoyable events, bringing family members together to compete as a team on the golf course.

     

    Designed to celebrate family connections through golf, the event welcomes adult and junior family teams, as well as adult family pairings, across multiple divisions. Champions are recognized in the Mixed Adult/Junior, Male Adult/Junior, Female Adult/Junior, Adult Female/Female, and Adult Male/Male divisions.

     

    Teams compete using the Pinehurst format, where both players tee off then switch and play their partners’ ball for the second shot. After the second shot, the team selects the best ball and alternates shots until the hole is completed. This format combines teamwork and strategy and allows both players to contribute throughout the round.

     

    Whether competing for a championship title within their division or simply making memories together, the family classic offers a special experience for families who share a love of the game!

     

  • Player of the Year Challenge (POY)

    The Golf NB Player of the Year Challenge recognizes the provinces top performing amateur golfers throughout the season. Players earn points based on their finishing positions designated in tournaments, with standings updated as the season progresses.

    POY standings are maintained in the Men’s, Senior Men’s, Women’s, Junior Boys, and Junior Girls divisions, giving golfers the opportunity to compete for season long recognition within their respective categories.

     

    POY standings are calculated using a points-based system that rewards string finishes and consistent performance across multiple events. By highlighting participation in competitions all throughout the province, the Challenge encourages player development, while recognizing those who perform at a high level over the course of the season.

     

    At the end of the season, the player with the highest point total in each division is named the Golf NB Player of the Year.
