The year started with 8 teams but only 2 remained for the 2021 Past Presidents Cup Inter-Club Challenge, held at the Lakeside Golf & Country Club on September 18^th & 19^th. The Past Presidents’ Cup, Inter-club Challenge, now in its 21^st year, is a competition run by Golf New Brunswick where clubs enter a 16-player team (divided into five different handicap flights).

This year, Terrain de Golf de la Vallée de Memramcook Valley Golf Club & the Westfield Golf & Country Club were the final two teams to face off for the title of 2021 Past Presidents’ Cup Champions.

The participants in the Past Presidents’ Cup Inter-Club Challenge are divided into five handicap flights as follows;

Players were met with summer conditions at Lakeside for Saturday’s first round of the final. After a captain’s meeting prior to the start of play, the matches took to the course with the A Flight leading the field, rounded out by the E flight members assuming the duty as the anchors. With no shortage of skill and passion on both teams, Saturday’s first-round would prove to be a hard-fought points battle.

Saturday’s results would total 63 points for Memramcook and 81 for Westfield. A mere 18 points would be the difference heading into Sunday with both clubs eager to finish strong. As per the competition rules, the first team to 145 points will win the Past Presidents’ Cup.

Day 2 brought high winds and cool temperatures compared to Saturday. Pleased with Round 1, both captains elected to keep the same match-ups for Sunday’s final round. Beginning at 8:40, the A Flight golfers took to the tee with each team attempting to leave it all on the course in the battle for the elusive Past Presidents’ Cup.

Firey play and tight matches would see Memramcook secure 69 points to Westfield’s 75 on Sunday. A two-day total of 156 would see the Westfield Golf & Country Club secure victory in the 2021 Past Presidents’ Cup.

A hard-fought weekend of golf in Lakeside proved to have no shortage of fun and memories for both teams. At the conclusion of play, the total scores finished Memramcook 132 | Westfield 156.

The 2021 NB Family Classic / Adult Junior, driven by Audi Moncton & the Jim Connolly “Little Swingers” is set to take place at the Country Meadows Golf Club in Indian Mountain, NB on Monday, August 9th.

This 18-hole event uses a Pinehurst Scoring method where partners both drive on each hole and then each play a 2nd shot with the other’s ball.  After the 2nd shots, a choice is made regarding the ball with which the hole will be completed, playing alternate shots from there until the ball is holed out. 

This unique event provides opportunities for everyone with six different divisions; Female/Female, Male/Male, Mixed, Adult/Junior (Male) and Adult/Junior (Female), and Adult/Junior Mixed.

In its 4^th year, the Jim Connolly “Little Swingers” is open to two-player teams made up of one youngster between the ages of 5 and 10 and one adult.  The Jim Connolly “Little Swingers” combines a 45-minute instructional clinic with 9 holes of golf using the Pinehurst Scoring method.

FREDERICTON, NB: The sun was shining Wednesday as players took to the course for the final round of the 2021 NB Men’s Mid-Master Championship. After 36 holes, Riverside’s David Russell remained in control at the top of the leaderboard after opening rounds of 68 & 76. With competitors edging closer, it would all come down to the final round to determine 2021’s champion.

Game #10 featured leaders, Sean Kee of Covered Bridge, West Hills’ Tony MacKinnon, and Riverside’s David Russell who started the morning 5-shots ahead of his playing partners.

Russell would continue his consistent play during his third and final round on his way to posting a 4-over, 74. His strategic play over three days would be enough to secure his first NB Men’s Mid-Master Championship, finishing at 8-over par. Slotting in second place would be West Hills’ Tony MacKinnon, finishing at 14-over after rounds of 75,74,75. Restioguche’s Darren MacPherson and Covered Bridge’s Sean Kee share third place after the pair both finish at 15-over par.

In the Dormie Workshop Par-3 Challenge, Covered Bridge’s Sean Kee came out victorious. His performance of four-over on the Par-3s this week saw him edge out Moncton’s James Thibault via retrogression. For this stellar play, Sean received a custom Dormie Workshop Par-3 Challenge Champion alignment stick cover.

FREDERICTON, NB: Players were greeted by a muggy and hazy morning at the Fredericton Golf Club for the start of round 2 of the NB Men’s Senior & Mid-Master Championships. After a month’s worth of rain over the last few days, the course would prove to be a true challenge for the 138 player field.

Leaders in the Men’s Senior Championship were first to the tee on Tuesday, led by Ashburn’s Paul Batchelor and Golf Canada Member, Richard York at 7:00 AM.

Hampton’s Darren Ritchie would go off for the low round of the day in the Senior Championship. A firey 4-under, 66 would push him to the top of the championship leaderboard alongside Richard York and Mike Jeffrey of Fox Creek. The trio all sit at 2-over par, thru 36 holes, and will make up the last pairing in Wednesday’s final round.

The host club’s Mark Francoeur posted a notable 2-under, 68 during round two which sees him move up 27 places to T10 heading into Wednesday. Mark joins leader, Darren Ritchie as the only two players to break par on Tuesday.

Leading the charge in the Super-Senior Championship is Ashburn’s Paul Batchelor. A second round, 4-over, 74 paired with his opening start of 1-over, 71 gives the Bedford resident a three-shot lead ahead of Fredericton’s Sonny Phillips. Phillips sits in second place at 8-over par, followed closely by Fox Creek’s Jean LeBlanc at 9-over.

In the Mid-Master Championship, overnight leader, David Russell of The Riverside Country Club sees himself once again at the top of the leaderboard on Tuesday. A second round, 6-over, 76 puts the Quispamsis native at 4-over heading into Wednesday’s final round. Sitting 5 shots behind Russell are West Hills’ Tony MacKinnon and Sean Kee of Covered Bridge. Attempting to chase down the leaders on Wednesday will be Restigouche’s Darren MacPherson who sits at 10-over and Country Meadow’s Stuart Musgrave at 11-over.

FREDERICTON, NB: A gloomy morning in the province’s capital greeted players for the opening round of the 45th NB Men’s Senior & Mid-Master Championships. 140 players converged at the Fredericton Golf Club for this year’s event as many looked to challenge for the Mid-Master, Senior & Super-Senior titles.

Monday’s opening round began at 7:00 AM with the Mid-Masters leading the field. Game #1 featured 2020 Champion, Stuart Musgrave of Country Meadows, Riverside’s Ed Reevey, and Tony MacKinnon of West Hills.

Reevey’s Riverside clubmate, David Russell stole the spotlight after an impressive opening round, 2-under, 68. A smooth 1-under front and 1-under back nine safely position the Quispamsis native on top of the Mid-Master leaderboard. Sitting 6-shots behind Russell is Restigouche’s Darren MacPherson who recorded a 4-over, 74 on Monday. Tied for third place after round 1 are West Hills’ Tony MacKinnon and Hampton’s Aaron Cole who both shot opening round 75’s.

A mid-day weather delay caused a momentary disturbance to play during round one. With the helping hands of the top-notch Fredericton Golf Club staff, players were able to return to the play once all standing water had been removed from the putting surfaces.

In the Senior Division, 2020 Senior & Super-Senior Champion, Gary Melanson accompanied by his trusty hickory golf clubs, led the championship flight off in Game #11. Joining him would be The Algonquin’s Mike Fernie and Hampton’s Darren Ritchie.

The early games in the Senior field would see their play come to a halt due to Monday’s weather delay. Unaffected however were Ashburn’s Paul Batchelor and Golf Canada Club Member, Richard York. The pair both lead the Senior Championship after opening rounds of 1-over, 71’s. One-shot behind the leaders are Grand Falls’ Denis Beaulieu, Gage’s Tom Cameron, Fredericton’s own, Sonny Phillips, and Fox Creek’s Mike Jeffrey who all signed for 2-over, 72’s.

Batchelor’s play sees him also take the top spot in the Super-Senior Championship, Fredericton’s Sonny Phillips sits close on his heels at 2-over par, one shot back. Rounding out the top-3 are Royal Oaks’ Mike Hosford, Herring Cove’s Kevin Farmer, and Moncton’s Brent Wilson who all fired opening rounds of 8-over, 78.

FREDERICTON, NB: The Fredericton Golf Club is the host site for the final major of the 2021 Golf NB Championship season as a 141 player field, comprised of New Brunswick’s top players aged 40 and older, tee it up at the 2021 NB Men’s Senior & Mid-Master Championships.

Established in 1916, the Fredericton Golf Club has a long-standing history as one of New Brunswick’s many premier championship venues, having most recently hosted the 2016 NB Ladies Provincial Championships. Recovering nicely from the club’s green renovation project in 2019, the 2021 NB Men’s Senior & Mid-Master marks the club’s return to the provincial hosting rotation.

The Par-70 6,080-yard parkland design features tight fairways that will require immense accuracy off the tee. The 54-Hole Competition will provide the ultimate test for players as they look to prove their worth in the race for New Brunswick’s 2021 Mid-Master, Senior, and Super-Senior Championship Crowns.

The Mid-Master Championship is made up of 30 players, highlighted by a number of past champions, including West Hills’ Tony MacKinnon who returns to his former club attempting to add to his previous titles from 2009, 2012, and 2014. Joining MacKinnon in Monday’s first-round group is 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 NB Men’s Mid-Master Champion, Ed Reevey of The Riverside Country Club. Rounding out the players in Game #1 is the 2013 & 2020 Mid-Master Champion from Country Meadows, Stuart Musgrave who will attempt to retain his title in Fredericton.

A field comprising of 111 of New Brunswick’s most elite and competitive golfers will provide no shortage of competition as the Senior field travels to the capital with many familiar faces and past champions.

2020 NB Senior & Super-Senior Champion, Gary Melanson of the Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club comes into the week looking to hone in on his skills and leverage his smooth ball striking and consistency off the tee in his battle against the 105-year-old of Fredericton Golf Club. 2015 NB Senior Champion and 2019 NB Super-Senior Champion, Sonny Phillips returns to this year’s championship event at his home club, looking to build off his impressive play last year at Miramichi.

Adding to the already impressive player roster for the event are 2013 NB Senior Champion, Mike Breen of Hampton, 2019 NB Mid-Master Champion, Dan Coulombe, 2012 NB Senior Champion, and 2017 & 2018 NB Super-Senior Champion, Herrick Hansen of Aroostook Valley, Hampton’s Darren Ritchie, and West Hills’ Bob Brown, along with many more championship contenders.

HAMPTON, NB– After 36 holes, four championship titles would come down to the wire on Monday. The Hampton Golf Club proved to be gracious hosts with a number of their dedicated members and staff volunteering their time to contribute to the success of this provincial championship. Players were greeted with hospitality and friendliness, along with an immaculately conditioned golf course that was set up to showcase championship golf in its truest form.

Under-19 Boy leaders took to the field at 10:20 AM, featuring a powerhouse group of the Truro Golf Club’s Owen Mullen, Miramichi’s Devon Gionet, and Hampton’s very own, Nicholas Ritchie. Three shots divided Mullen from his competitors as they put a peg in the ground for Monday’s final round.

The Team Canada National Junior Team member picked up where he left off from rounds one and two with a stellar third round, 2-under, 70. His solid play on Monday moved him to a tournament total of 5-under par and a comfortable cushion of 11 shots ahead of his closest competitor to secure the 2021 NB Under-19 Boys title. Miramichi’s Devon Gionet secured second place in the Under-19 Championship following his three-round total of 6-over, 222 (76,70,76). In third, Hampton’s Nicholas Ritchie did his home fans proud with his consistent play against top competition. Ritchie finished at 8-over, 2 shots behind Gionet.

In the Under-17 Boys Championship, Monday’s round was the setting for an on-course shootout, as Truro’s Simon Mullen and Gowan Brae’s Nicholas Colton both entered the day tied at 13-over. Mullen would pull ahead during the final round after recording a 5-over, 77 to end the event at 18-over, 234 total. 2020 Under-17 Champion, Julien Babineau of Fox Creek managed to move into second place after a final round of 2-over, 74. Rounding out the top three in the Under-17 Championship was the Fredericton Golf Club’s Ben Nicholson, whose final-round 6-over, 78 put him one shot back of Babineau.

The final round of the Under-19 Girls Championship would be a close-fought battle with the Riverside’s Callie Taylor and Mackenzie Deveau of Royal Oaks beginning the day with only one shot between them. Joining the two in the final trio was Sussex’s Rachel Steeves who began the day 7-shots behind Taylor. Following closely behind the leaders was Riverside’s Addison McClune, 2020 Under-15 Champion who started the day a number of shots back.

McClune would leave it all out on the course during Monday’s final round. A tournament low of 81, 9-over par was enough to catapult up the leaderboard and secure both the Under-19 and Under-17 Championships. It was Royal Oaks’ Mackenzie Deveau who finished one shot behind McClune with a tournament total of 39-over, 255. Joining Deveau in a tie for second is the Riverside’s Callie Taylor who also finished the event at 39-over.

The Under-17 leaderboard looked very similar with Taylor finishing second in the competition, followed by Sussex’s Rachel Steeves.

Looking ahead, the Hampton Golf Club will have another major hosting opportunity as they proudly get set to host the Canadian National Junior Girls Championships on August 1st-4th, 2023.

HAMPTON, NB– Many players took to the course on Sunday with the goal of out-performing their first-round results. However, the temptation of risk and reward, paired with firm and fast greens would set the tone for a challenging moving day at the NB Under-19 Championships.

The Under-19 field led the way during Round 2 as the Under-15 and Under-13 leaders would anchor the draw as they take in all the glory that comes with their Championship Sunday.

Leading the charge in the hunt for Under-15 Boys Championship crown was Westfield’s Tyler Graham. After an opening round, 13-over, 85, Graham turned his play around on Sunday with a steady 6-over, 78, which was enough to secure a victory in the Under-15 Boys Championship by four strokes. In second place, Truro Golf Club’s Elliot Mullen, who’s two day total of 23-over, 167 left him with a two shot cushion ahead of his competition. In a two-way tie for third are Westfield’s Morgan Costain and Petitcodiac’s Chase Burgess who both fired second round, 14-over, 86s on their way to tournament totals of 25-over, 169.

Ken-Wo’s Kooper MacKay captured the Under-13 Boys title after rounds of 8-over, 80, and a stellar second-round score of 2-over, 74. MacKay is joined at the top of the leaderboard by Moncton’s Carter Lavigne who finished 10 shots behind first, and Abercrombie’s Grady Cohen who secured third with a final score of 25-over, 169, (86,83).

It was Abercrombie’s Avery Cohen who captured the Under-15 Girls crown after a Sunday final round of 12-over, 84, bringing her two-day total to 22-over par. Finishing in second place was Rachel Steeves of the Sussex Golf & Curling Club at 27-over, followed by Fox Creek’s Neve Miller who finished the event in third place.

In the Under-13 Girls Championship, Daphne Taylor of the Riverside Country Club battled the difficult conditions at Hampton over two days to finish her first competitive event off in style and improving on her first-round score by 13 shots.

Continuing his fine run of play from round 1 was Truro Golf Club’s and Canada National Junior Team member, Owen Mullen. Mullen leads the Boys Under-19 field after his second-round 2-under, 70. Three shots back of the Nova Scotian is Hampton’s very own, Nicholas Ritchie. Ritchie sits in solo second place at a two-round total of even-par (74,70). Completing the hat-trick for second-round 2-under, 70 cards is Miramichi’s Devon Gionet. The talented junior followed up his opening round 76, with a stellar 2-under, 70 to punch his ticket into Monday’s final pairing for the Under-19 Boys.

Things are tight at the top of the Under-17 Championship leaderboard as Truro’s Simon Mullen and Nicholas Colton of Gowan Brae both share the lead heading into Monday’s final round at 13-over. Joining them in the final pairing is Ben Nicholson of the Fredericton Golf Club who sits three shots behind at 16-over.

In the girls Under-19 Championship, Callie Taylor of the Riverside Country Club heads into Monday’s final round with a one-shot lead over Royal Oaks’ Mackenzie Deveau. Sussex’s Rachel Steeves rounds out the top three at 27-over par.

Similar names scatter the Under-17 Girls Leaderboard, Taylor secures her pole position heading into Monday at 20-over par. Following after is Rachel Steeves, 7 shots back, and Riverside’s Addison McClune slides into third place at 29-over.

Monday’s final round is scheduled to begin at 7:00 AM. Players with the highest gross total in the Under-19 Championships will tee off first, followed by leaders in the Under-19 Boys and the leaders in the Under-19 Girls.

HAMPTON, NB– A foggy morning greeted players at the 2021 NB Under-19 Championships, however as time moved on and players began to warm up, so did the weather.

Fast fairways and firm greens would be the story behind Round 1 as players were challenged by the difficult scoring conditions created at the Hampton Golf Club.

The Under-19 Boys led the field off at 7:00 AM highlighted by Golf Canada National Junior Team Member, Owen Mullen of the Truro Golf Club and Covered Bridge & JH Sports’ Daniel Kirby.

Mullen would go on to record the low round of the day with a 1-under, 71 performance. A front nine 37, even-par paired with a 1-under, 34 back would see the Team Canada and Truro Golf Club member sit on top of the leaderboard after round 1. St. Ignace’s Pierre Luc Arsenault finds himself in solo second after a steady 1-over, 73. Hampton’s very own, Nicholas Ritchie finished at 2-over, 74 followed shortly after by Miraimichi’s Devon Gionet, Gowan Brae’s Nicholas Colton, and Fox Creek’s Oliver Aucoin who all recorded opening rounds of 4-over, 76.

Gowan Brae’s Nicholas Colton holds the round 1 lead in the Under-17 Championship after his 4-over, 76. Three shots behind Colton are Fredericton’s Aaron Partington and Mikael LePage of Restigouche, the duo carded matching 7-over, 79’s during Saturday’s difficult scoring conditions. Brady Wood of the Fredericton Golf Club pushes his way into fourth place after an 8-over, 80.

Truro’s Elliot Mullen joins his brother Owen at the top of their respective leaderboards after round one. A 7-over, 79 gives mullen the overall lead in the boys Under-15 Championship, followed closely by Westfield’s Morgan Costain and Petitcodiac Valley’s Chase Burgress whose opening rounds of 83, 11-over see the pair share second place. Tyler Graham of Westfield joins the hunt at the top of the leaderboard in fourth place after his 13-over, 85.

In the Under-13 Championship, Ken-Wo’s Kooper McKay leads the field after his first round, 8-over, 80. Carter Lavigne of the Moncton Golf & Country Club follows behind with a 9-over, 81, and five shots ahead of Abercrombie’s Grady Cohen who carded a 14-over, 86. The three will have it all on the line for tomorrow’s final round as only one player can leave with the 2021 NB Under-13 Boys Championship title.

The Riverside Country Club’s Addison McClune leads the Under-19 Girls Championship after her opening round of 10-over, 80. A small margin separates McClune and clubmate Callie Taylor who finished with an 11-over, 81 and sits one shot ahead of Sussex’s Rachel Steeves after carding a 12-over, 84.

The Under-17 Girls leaderboard mirrors the Under-19 as all three players keep their positions across both championships.

Abercrombie’s Avery Cohen leads the charge in the Under-15 Girls Championship after her 10-over, 82, and holds a two-shot lead ahead of her competition. Riverside’s Callie Taylor holds second place, with Sussex’s Rachel Steeves rounding out the top-3.

The Riverside Country Club’s Daphne Taylor leads the Under-13 Girls, heading into Sunday’s final round.

The Dormie Workshop Par-3 Challenge rewards the player who performs the best on all par-3’s during the course of the championship. This weekend, the Under-15 Girls & Boys and Under-19 Girls and Boys will all attempt to showcase their smooth iron play in the race for the Par-3 Challenge crowns.

Sunday’s second round and final for our Under-13 & Under-15 field is scheduled to commence at 7:00 AM. Players with the highest first-day gross total in the Under-19 Championships will tee off first, followed by the Under-13 & Under-15 leaders in the middle of the day

FREDERICTON, NB– 84 players from across New Brunswick and Nova Scotia will converge in Hampton for the 2021 NB Under-19 Championships. Taking place from July 17th-19th, the Hampton Golf Course will once again welcome some of Atlantic Canada’s most exciting young talents.

The Under-13 & Under-15 Championships will take place alongside the Under-19 this week, as provincial restrictions saw the postponement of the event originally slated to take place in June. With players given the opportunity to experience a larger tournament this year, the Under-13 & Under-15 will look to return to the Gage Golf & Curling Club in 2022 as previously scheduled.

Returning to the field for this year’s event is the 2020 NB Junior Boys Champion, Daniel Kirby of the Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club and JH Sports. Kirby recently returned from his freshman year at the University of Victoria and is coming off a second-place finish in the PEI Cooke Insurance Junior Boys Championship, and a win at the Fredericton Golf Club Junior Invitational earlier this week. 2020 NB Juvenile Boys Champion, Julien Babineau of Fox Creek is also scheduled to tee it up this week in Hampton, along with clubmate and 2020 NB Bantam Boys Champion, Jacob LeBlanc. The three will look to fight off the rest of the field in order to retain their titles.

Another extremely notable name this week is Nova Scotia’s, Owen Mullen. Mullen, a Notre Dame NCAA D1 freshman in the fall comes to New Brunswick after his recent win at the PEI Cooke Insurance Junior Championship alongside a 4th place finish in the PEI Cooke Insurance Amateur, a win at the NSGA U-19 Championship, and a T5 finish at the 87th NSGA Men’s Amateur Championship. The Team Canada National Junior Squad standout looks to continue his good run of form in New Brunswick.

The NB Under-19 Girls Championship is up for grabs as defending champion, Julie Gauvin ages out of the competition. Julie spent this year at Delaware State, NCAA enjoying a successful rookie season.

Looking to take the vacant crown is Royal Oaks’ Mackenzie Deveau, the former Team New Brunswick player and 2017 NB Bantam Girls Champion will look to build momentum off her appearance in the NB Ladies Provincial Championship, Driven by Audi Moncton last week at her home club.

Rounding out the field on the Junior Girls side is 2020, Juvenile Girls Champion Stéphanie Roy of Fox Creek, and 2020 Bantam Girls Champion, Addison McClune of The Riverside Country Club.

The junior girls in the field this week can use this as an early scouting opportunity for 2023 when Hampton will proudly host the Canadian National Junior Girls Championships on August 1st-4th.

The depth of field in this year’s event indicates there will be a lot to play for when the juniors tee it up at the Hampton Golf Course on Saturday.
